It may be early in the season, but wins in District, especially in a cross-town rivalry mean a lot.
Granby hosted Norview Friday night and the Epps brothers lifted the Comets in a late game surge.
“(The) game was a great contest. It was fun. Norview is a rivalry game and the crowd is always into it. It was a game of runs,” said Antwaun Epps, who led the Comets with 27 points to go along with three rebounds, seven assists and five steals. “It was real important (to win this one). We had to let them know this is our house.”
Jayden Epps chipped in 21 points with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
We could have played a little better. We had the lead in the first half and we gave up the lead. We came back in the second half and persevered through it. We trusted our teammates, came back in the second half, and got the win,” said Jayden after the game. “(Norview) plays pretty fast. They’re a talented group. We know them. We know how they play. We were able to match their intensity.”
Granby closed the first quarter with a 14 point run. The home team took a 14 point lead in the second quarter, but by halftime the score was tied at XX. The Comets rode a 17-3 run to end the game and win by 13 points.
“Man, I tell you that was a tough game. It was an exciting game. We’re glad to be back in the Eastern District,” said Coach Mike Evans. For a stretch, teams played in conferences according to enrollment. Granby is Class 6 and Norview is Class 5 meaning that they weren’t guaranteed to see each other as often as they would years ago.
“They have some young guys and some great talent out there. (Norview) played a great game,” said the coach. “I told the guys we’re going to set the tone on defense. Norview made a good run and we stood up to the challenge.”
With the win Granby ran their record to 5-0 on the season. Salem and Lake Taylor are next on the schedule for the Comets.
