The Princess Anne Girls Basketball team performed as expected in a championship win.
The Cavaliers nailed down their sixth straight state championship in the Class 5 Girls title game by a score of 69-55 over Thomas Edison High School.
Brianna Jackson led PA in scoring with 23 points. Princess Anne’s sixth straight title win dwarfs the accomplishments of any other Boys or Girls Basketball team in VHSL history. Norcom’s Boys won the state championship for four years in a row from 2014-2017. Millbrook, Cosby and Monacan have won three state titles each, all in this decade.
“I’m elated right now,” said Princess Anne head coach Darnell Dozier after the win completed a 29-1 season. “Our assistant coaches and kids did such a great job this year. We were always undermanned. Injuries killed us this year. In the end, we prevailed and that’s what it’s about.”
Coach Dozier now has a championship ring for every finger. That’s a rare accomplishment.
“A lot of hard work goes into winning ten state championships, but I have good parents who allow me to push the kids to the next level. That helps a lot.”
Senior center Brianna Jackson led Princess Anne with 23 points, 16 rebounds, an assist, a steal and five blocks.
“I had to leave it all on the court. Not only is it my last state championship game, but it’s my last game as a high school player, period,” said Jackson. “Edison is a good team. We just had to come out to play.”
Guard Aziaha James tallied 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in the championship game.
James noted that the Cavalier defense had to step up after Edison found their groove shooting threes. They pulled away in the second half.
“We lost three good players from last year’s team. We had to make up for that. We had five returning and four freshmen. We had to carry them and help them along the way,” said James.
The Princess Anne squad will be deep again in 2019-20 when they go for State Title number eleven and their seventh in a row.
