Booker T. Washington ATH Tayeon Woods chooses the University of Charleston
When the early signing period came around on the back half of December, Booker T. Washington running back Tayeon Woods contemplated the idea of getting ahead of the curve and announcing his commitment. It would’ve been a commitment that validated almost 13 years of hard work up until this point. However, the BTW product opted against making any type of commitment during the early signing period citing the elevation of his most recent SAT score as a tipping point for accruing more interest.
Not to undermine National Signing Day coming up in almost a month, Woods (2019 ATH 5-10 215) made the decision to announce his collegiate commitment on none other than New Year’s Day. Some may have seen his action as a bit cliché, but Woods felt as though it was time to start anew and couldn’t think of any better way to wash off 2018 than with a crisp commitment to the University of Charleston.
“New year brings new beginnings. I’m starting off fresh,” Woods told recruit757 when asked about the timing of his commitment.
“Charleston seems like the program that best fits me according to my offers,” Woods told recruit757. “Coach Freeland was honest to me during the whole process. The history of the program is just great.”
Woods was slated to make his decision at 1:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day. However, his commitment was slightly delayed and was announced 30 minutes past the original time given. The BTW product chose the University of Charleston ahead of 10 other programs which included: Virginia University of Lynchburg, Bluefield, Birmingham Prep, RCC, Arkansas Baptist, Maryland Prep, Palmetto Prep, Itasca CC, Graceland University and Total Performance Prep.
For many prospects during the recruiting process the goal is to hit the road and find a program that feels the most like home. It’s about finding a program vulnerable enough to wear its emotions on its sleeves when courting and one that shows a fair amount of interest. For Woods and his family, you have his permission to check each and every box when it comes down to making his decision.
“(It came down to) family atmosphere, great academics and a football system that fits me,” Woods stated.
