With a Penn State and Clemson hat in front him, Cam Kelly spoke to the crowd at Oscar Smith High School.
His family was there. His high school coaches were there. Friends and fans were there.
Cam’ron Kelly gave his thank yous. He showed his appreciation for his good fortune. Then he dropped a bomb on the crowd.
“I am beyond all in… at Virginia Tech!”
The crowd roared.
The home team won a recruiting battle.
After losing three in-state kids (Hakeem Beamon, Brandon Smith and Devyn Ford) to Penn State, the Hokies grabbed a win in getting a commitment from Cam Kelly. Kelly had well over 30 college scholarship offers and was coveted by big name programs from coast to coast.
“I wanted to stay home and make (them) a powerhouse again. Virginia Tech was a perfect opportunity,” said Kelly. “I’ll be rockin’ number 8 when I get up there. The sky’s the limit at Tech.”
There were some thoughts that Kelly could go out west. He has family there. He took a trip to visit Coach Mike Leach and Washington State. Oklahoma wanted him very badly.
Instead, he’ll join class of 2018 stars Devon Hunter (Indian River) and former teammate Keshon Artis at Virginia Tech.
“We need to keep this pipeline in Chesapeake for sure. With Devon at Safety and me at corner, there’s nothing wrong there,” he exclaimed. “With Keshon at linebacker… they put together a killer class last year. This decision is the biggest decision of my life right here. I’m looking forward to the next three to four years at Tech. Having those guys already there, people I know and love and train with, going in there to play with them, there’s a comfort level.”
He learned a lot from the recruiting process. There were times where he couldn’t escape the pressures of a huge recruitment where everybody wants you.
“Everybody is trying to sell you that perfect pitch. Honestly, Tech let me do my own thing. I always had a relationship with them. Everybody else was too busy selling the dream, selling this, selling that,” Cam said. “I knew from my personal experience, in my relationship with the coaches at Tech that this is real. There’s no sale. Just come in and do what you gotta do.”
Cam was recruited by many of the coaches on the staff. He touted a close relationship 757 region recruiter Zohn Burden. He also mentioned deep relationships with Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster and Cornerbacks Coach Brian Mitchell,
Kelly heads into his tenure at Virginia Tech with high aspirations. He sees Virginia Tech as a winner and he can’t wait to contribute.
“We’re going to win the ACC and win the National Championship. That’s the plan.”
