CNU Football gets a first shot at a Spring Showcase

Head Coach Art Link and his Christopher Newport University Football program has a unique opportunity this weekend.
The Captains will roll out the red carpet for fans and prospective athletes alike as they host their first ever Spring Football Game.
Budgets are smaller at the Division III level and a spring game is uncommon, but the Captains have an exception this year because they’re headed to Canada for an exhibition game.
“We get ten padded practices as we prepare for our game vs. the Hamilton Hurricanes in Ontario, Canada (later this month). We will travel to Pittsburgh and practice at the Steelers facility and then go to Niagara Falls. We will then have a meal with the team we play followed by a game the next day,” Coach Link explained. “Our team raised $35K to make this trip.”
So the football team gets extra practice sessions and the fans get to see the team in spring action for the first time ever.
“Frostburg State did it a few years back and they won the league last year. They went to Final 8 the year before, so it helped them,” Link stated. “Most Division III programs don’t have pads at all during the spring. We had to overnight our equipment from reconditioning (in order to have it now).”
Frostburg has been so successful that they’ve taken on a move to Division II. Their continued success is expected.
There’s no reason to expect Christopher Newport Football to move up to Division II anytime soon, but their success in Division III is well documented. This experience may mean another upswing for the program.
CNU will have a junior day for prospective football athletes from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Blue/White Spring Scrimmage from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission to the scrimmage is free. Prospects interested in attending the junior day should contact CNU recruiting coordinator Corey Headley. His contact information is available by clicking here.
