The Pirates made a major change heading into the 2018 football season. Head coach Connell Maynor stepped down after coaching four years from the sidelines at Hampton University. His departure at the end of the 2017 football season paved the way for Robert Prunty to become next in line as head coach of the Pirates.
Not only did the Pirates snag a new head coach, they also made a switch from the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference to the Big South Conference during the summer of last year. Prunty coached Hampton to a 7-3 record which was the Pirates best season of football since finishing 10-1 during the 2006 season.
Hampton’s offense was true last season averaging 34 points and over 400 total yards per contest. However, its defense surrendered 28 points and over 300 yards per contest. Coach Prunty and his coaching staff are looking to improve the Pirates’ defense moving forward and they’re searching close to home in an effort to find their next defensive playmaker.
Phoebus starting defensive back Corey Wilson (2020 DB 6-2 190) has been in contact with Hampton ever since the acquisition of head coach Robert Prunty. Their conversations have been extremely substantial over the last year and led to the Phoebus product in securing an offer from the Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.
“Coach Prunty called up Coach Blunt on Wednesday morning and told him he would like to offer me,” Wilson explained. “Later on that day, Coach Blunt pulled me aside after practice and told me the good news.”
Wilson heads into the 2019 season coming off his most productive year in a Phantoms uniform. The three-star defensive back accumulated 116 tackles, four sacks, and three interceptions on the year. The offer from Hampton marks his fourth all told since the end of February. Wilson also holds offers from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Fordham, and the United States Naval Academy.
One-day camps will begin to fill his schedule starting in June. However, Wilson will be one of many to participate in the College Day workout facilitated by Phantoms head coach Jeremy Blunt on Wednesday at Darling Stadium. The Phantoms will tip off at 4:00 p.m.
“I have our College Day workouts on May 1. Other than that, I will be getting ready for college one-day camps starting in June,” Wilson stated.
