Hampden-Sydney College is getting one heck of a high school linebacker.
At Cox High School, he has not only been well coached, but his training regimen has been excellent and his academics are top notch.
While service academies showed some interest, Lyons narrowed his options to Randolph Macon and HSC. The Tigers won out.
“I kind of narrowed it down to HSC and RMC in January, but when I visited HSC, I knew that’s where I wanted to be,” Lyons said. “I’ve always known about them and been interested in them because a couple of older players from Cox went there. I kind of always knew that if I didn’t go Division I, I would want to go to HSC.”
Quite a few recent Cox Falcons have attended Hampden-Sydney. There’s a good pipeline going between the schools. The short list includes Sam Brooks, Mike DeMasi and Matt DeMasi.
“The Cox alumni definitely played a big part in it. I talked to them a lot about it. I really liked how the program is one big brotherhood. There is a lot of tradition behind the program,” he said. “It’s also very good academically.”
Lyons visited Hampden-Sydney over the weekend and he got the call from Defensive Coordinator Wes Dodson on Monday to let him know that there was a spot waiting for him.
It didn’t take long for Cullen to make HSC his pick.
In his senior season, Cullen stacked up 78 tackles (36 solo), four sacks, an interception and four forced fumbles. The Tigers will love having him in the program this fall.
