Our number 14 selection is a dog in the trenches who’s motivated to bring his team back to another deep playoff run in 2019.
Heading into the regular season, we recognize the top 30 senior prospects in and around the region of Hampton Roads. Continuing our countdown at number 14 is Maury defensive end Darian Varner.
#14 Darian Varner (2020 DE 6-2 245) – Maury High School
Varner’s offer list included East Carolina, Liberty, Temple, Norfolk State, Coastal Carolina, Kent State, NC A&T, Charlotte and Ohio University. It was quite a list, but a developing relationship with Temple and a visit to Philadelphia led to a deeper relationship that stuck with Darian.
He talked about his Temple commitment saying: “Me and Coach Stew (D-line coach Walter Stewart) have been talking since March, every day. Non-stop. He’s been helping me out; giving me tips. I visited Philly (in June) and they offered me on the spot. I felt like it was home and we took things further on from there.”
He’s one of four seniors at Maury who are already locked in to be Division I athletes next fall. Wide-out KeAndre Lambert, has dozens of college scholarship offers with a short list that includes Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, USC, Clemson, Florida, Duke, Michigan, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Penn State. Running back C.J. Beasley has committed to Virginia Tech. Slot receiver and DB Dashaun Peele has committed to Navy.
Varner and his contributions to the Commodore defense will have a lot to do with Maury’s success in 2019. We’ll see him and Maury in the first action of their season at the recruit757 Kickoff Classic on Saturday, August 31 at Darling Stadium in Hampton.
