Darien Varner (2020 DE 6-2 245) is coming into his senior season, and his work on landing college scholarship offers is not done.
On Sunday, he worked out with Old Dominion and by Monday that work had earned him an offer.
Now there were at least 20 different colleges on hand at Old Dominion, including Appalachian State, Bryant, Virginia, Penn State, James Madison, Maine, New Hampshire, Temple, Delaware State, Chowan and plenty of others.
Old Dominion didn’t pull the trigger on an offer, but by Monday night Varner heard from James Madison and the Dukes extended a scholarship offer.
“I have been in touch (with the coaches at JMU) the entire off-season and we met up at ODU’s camp so I could perform in front of the staff. They said the next night that I earned my official offer,” said Varner. The Dukes had five or six members of the coaching staff at the ODU camp, so there’s no doubt they had ample opportunity to observe him.
Varner’s quest for offers isn’t over yet.
On Thursday, he’ll head to Liberty to camp for the Flames’ coaching staff. Later this month he’ll head to Temple.
“I’m hearing from ODU, Towson, Delaware State, Liberty, Temple, Villanova, and Appalachian State,” Varner explained.
In addition to James Madison, Varner holds offers from Norfolk State, NC A&T, Charlotte, Akron, Kent State and Coastal Carolina.
Varner is determined to make a college decision soon.
“I will be making my decision in late June or early July,” he said.
Paul Hutson, III lands his first offer
On the flip side, freshman lineman Paul Hutson (2022 OL/DL 6-1 260) has plenty of time to work on his college recruitment.
Hutson showed well at Maury’s College Day workout a few weeks ago, and now he had landed his Second offer.
Virginia Tech got in early by offering Hutson at the start of his high school career. Now that his freshman season is over, Hutson has landed an offer from Coach Mike London and William and Mary.

More news and more offers are coming. You can expect the Commodores to be very active over the summer as the 2019 football season approaches.
