“It’s honestly a dream come true. It makes me feel like all of my hard work on and off the field is paying off.” -Darrell Bryant-
When it comes to Coach Connell Maynor and the Hampton Pirates its quite simple. If you put the work in and prove that you’re a cut above the rest your playing time will be far from scarce.
Phoebus starting linebacker Darrell Bryant understands the time is now to further exposure and turn interest into opportunity. Interest met opportunity a few weeks ago when Bryant decided to head north for Baltimore and visit Morgan State. On Thursday, Bryant received another opportunity to expand his availability by staying a little closer to home, Home by the Sea that is.
Hampton University was the next stop on Bryant’s college tour where defensive coordinator Michael Ketchum treated Bryant to the three factors when reviewing film for defensive recruiting.
“It felt like family when the defensive coordinator brought me into the building. We sat down and we talked about football. We also talked about what he looks for when recruiting. Before we did that, he told me three things he looks for when watching tape on defensive recruits,” Bryant stated.
Coach Ketchum is extremely thorough and the point when scouting defensive players for the Hampton Pirates. The way a defensive player moves, tackling ability, and field intelligence weigh into whether or not a prospect can be trusted with a position on the Pirates defense.
“He (Coach Ketchum) saw all three factors in less than 30 seconds. He also told me he was very impressed in me and he’ll come visit Phoebus in April. I’m glad he’s right there in our backyard,” Bryant said.
Norfolk State has requested that Bryant be a participant on March 25 for Junior Day. The University of Richmond will be the first stop in April for the Phoebus product as he continues to maximize his exposure into the spring.
