Greenbrier Christian athletic director Dan Moore wasted little time in finding a new head football coach.
It wasn’t much more than a month ago that Tommy Austin transitioned into the head coaching position at Bishop Sullivan Catholic.
Now, Greenbrier Christian has their new head football coach, and he comes in with championship experience.
In 2018, GCA’s first season as an eight-man football program, Austin led the Gators to a 5-5 regular season record and a nail-biting 37-36 first round playoff loss to Brunswick Academy.
New head coach Kevin Washington comes in from coaching Word of God of Raleigh (NC), best known as the proving ground for NBA star John Wall. Washington was the athletic director and basketball coach when he started the school’s eight-man football program in 2006. His teams have won multiple NCISAA eight-man state titles.
Washington is a Lake Taylor grad, so it’s a homecoming for him. In addition to his duties as a football coach, Washington will also lead the boys basketball and track programs.
Eight-man football in Virginia got it’s own experimental league in 2018 when several schools were having a problem fielding a full team for 11-man football. Hampton Roads Academy and Greenbrier Christian were the first to sign on, and according to unofficial accounts, there are more schools including some public schools, who have shown interest in moving into the league.
At this point, eight-man football is administered by VISAA and has seven teams statewide playing in their own league. The 2019 schedule has not been released, but we may see that number increase this fall.
