On an unseasonably warm start to the month of December, George Wythe traveled into Franklin and knocked off the undefeated Broncos 27 to 21. The Broncos were down early and never recovered.
In what many thought would be another game where Franklin would post another 40 or more points easily, the Maroons were able to hold the Broncos to their lowest game total of the year. That, it appears, was the key to winning the game. Keeping Franklin’s many weapons “contained” and beating them at their own game. George Wythe was able to implement a little bit of a power running game themselves to outscore Franklin by one touchdown.
Another key to the Wythe win was not committing an early turnover that the Broncos could convert into a quick lead. The Maroons also kept their penalties to a minimum to refrain from giving Franklin those “extra” downs they had become accustomed to getting all season long.
Franklin will rebound easily and should be a contender again next year since they’re only graduating a few seniors. This team is a good representation of the talent available in the western section of the 757 area and it often goes unnoticed.
I hope to be able to sit down with Coach Parker sometime in the coming week and talk about opportunities available for those seniors, reflect on this past season and get his forecast for the 2013 season.
