Coach Robert Prunty rounded out Hampton’s 2020 recruiting class with a solid haul of 13 additional athletes for the Pirates’ football team.
Six of the student-athletes are in-state, and four come from the 757.
“We are extremely excited about the additions we have made to our roster with the signees in the second phase of our recruiting class,” Prunty said. “We made some key additions that will have an instant impact on our program during the 2020 season. Most importantly, this is an exceptional group of young men with some absolutely outstanding students.”
The locals include Oscar Smith’s best offensive weapon in their 2019 season, slot receiver and running back Romon Copeland. Copeland had 53 catches for 1,113 yards and 14 touchdowns, plus he rushed for 567 yards on 63 carries and 8 touchdowns. That’s an average of 14.5 yards per touch in his senior season.
Phoebus defensive back Corey Wilson was named First Team All-District, All-Region and All-State in his senior season. Like players from Oscar Smith, Phoebus athletes come from a winning program and Coach Prunty will bank on those winning habits carrying over to the college level and into the Pirates program.
Offensive lineman Devaughn Orr announced his commitment to Hampton University last week: “Throughout my whole recruiting process, Hampton has stayed near the top no matter what visit I was on. It seems like they really have a plan to use me in their program.”
Tabb long snapper Brandon Richards rounds out the commitments from the 757. He brings a 3.9 GPA and 1320 SAT to Hampton University, and that mental acuity translates into great play on the gridiron. After his senior season, Richards was named All-Region 3A as a long snapper.
