Due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence, schools are now making schedule changes

Hurricane Florence is set to make landfall in North Carolina late Thursday. Coastal Virginia will see the effects of the storm Thursday and the current path of the storm is expected to cut through the middle of Virginia after passing over Wilmington, North Carolina and the Raleigh/Durham area.
The coming storm is changing plans for high school football across the state.
The VHSL has released a statement explaining what amounts to a hands-off policy that will let individual school divisions plan their own schedule changes and/or cancellations for all athletic events.
Per VHSL Communications Director Mike McCall: “Due to the impending severe weather forecast this week, the VHSL office has received numerous inquiries regarding cancellation of athletic events. The VHSL is not issuing a statewide cancellation of events. The decision to cancel events is under the sole discretion of local school divisions. The safety of athletes, coaches, staff, and fans remains the primary concern for member schools when making individual decisions this week.”
Several schools have already announced schedule changes. Varina will host Hermitage at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday instead of Friday night. Churchland will visit Armstrong at 6 p.m. Wednesday instead of Friday night.
Churchland A.D. Mike Whittington explained his thinking behind the decision to move their game, which is pretty straight forward.
“We wanted to avoid problems with the weather and get the game in. We don’t want to have to play two games in one week if we don’t have to,” said Whittington.
The Truckers have already doubled their win total from last year and stand to go 3-1 with a win over Armstrong.
Considering the storm’s expected path and the amounts of rain and wind the hurricane will bring, if games aren’t played Wednesday, they likely couldn’t be made up until Monday at the earliest.
We’ll keep you up to date on schedule changes as they happen. Expect few, if any games in the state, to be played on Friday night.
