The first prospect has opened up and announced his commitment for the 2019-2020 football season within the Peninsula District. Phoebus starting running back Jaylen White has already put in his claim as one of the top running backs in the region.
He’s generated a great deal of recruiting interest since the postseason concluded especially from the coaching staff up at the United States Naval Academy. White took one visit up to Annapolis getting the chance to mingle, talk football, and get a feel for its campus. After feeling as though it was one of the best visits he has gone on, White decided to announce his commitment to the Naval Academy just weeks before a first week showdown with Malik Newton and Lake Taylor.
“What made me choose Navy is because the campus is nice, they play in a great conference, and Coach Green has been so transparent with me the entire time throughout this process. I went to Navy once and it as the best visit I went on,” White explained.
The expectation is for White (2020 RB 5-10 182) to play running back while at Navy, but the plan could change once they get him into camp and figure out what works best for both him and the team. The Phoebus product is coming off of a season in which he accumulated 1,476 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns to match as one the teams feature backs. With the Phantoms focusing on a week one battle with Lake Taylor, it was a no brainer for White to announce his commitment ahead of the of time. Sunday was the best time for him to lock down his position with the Naval Academy.
“With the level of football I’m playing at, the spots would have filled up around the time the season started,” White stated. “More than likely, the offers that could possibly come around in-season aren’t going to be as good as the American Athletic Conference.”
Jaylen’s commitment to Navy is added to 757 commitments from Tyrell Spruill (Indian River), Drew Wilder (Jamestown) and Dashaun Peele (Maury).
