Norcom has been a hub for moving parts heading into the summer months. At the conclusion of postseason play, Norcom brass found it necessary to change direction and did so by terminating longtime head coach Larry Archie. It was speculated that Coach Archie wouldn’t remain on the sideline for too long and a month after found a new home at Granby High School. Faces we’ve grown accustomed to latching onto have also found a new home either due to graduation or continuing their athletic and academic careers at various collegiate programs.
CaSaan Dixon, Thomas White, Celon Lawrence, and Taurus Jones among others are out. This means the elevation of Antwaun Powell, Teion Coston, Jacoby Smith, and Demonte Dunlap is needed now more than ever moving forward. Another prospect that is expected to step up for the Greyhounds this season will be Karon Prunty (2020 ATH 6-2 183). The Norcom product has received an exponential boost in his recruitment since the end of the season and on Saturday morning was able to secure an offer from Marshall University.
“It started when Coach Price came up to Norcom last month and started talking to me,” Prunty explained. “He said Marshall was recruiting me because they like the way I play and he planned on keeping in contact with me. He also told me that the coaching staff would be thinking about me and on Saturday he texted me and said they wanted to offer me.”
The Thundering Herd has been extremely true to type when recruiting in Hampton Roads especially on the Southside. Over the last few years Marshall has received either commitments or transfers from Jaquan Yulee, Tavente Beckett, and Terence Ricks. It’s ability to pull commitments from the 757 is an accomplishment in which Prunty acknowledges as a really good thing.
“It feels really good because they’re a good school to play for,” Prunty explained. “Also, a couple of 757 guys play for them too so it really felt good. I’m thankful and blessed for this opportunity.”
Prunty plays multiple positions including defensive back and wide receiver, however; he’s being recruited as an “athlete” which should increase his all-purpose attractiveness. His recruitment continues to pick up steam as he also holds offers from: Richmond, Delaware State, Tennessee, Elon, Towson, Charlotte, Temple, Norfolk State, Liberty, and the College of William and Mary. He’s also beginning to field interest from East Carolina, Old Dominion, and Appalachian State. Expect his schedule to fill out now that we’ve reached June including an appearance at ODU’s prospect camp this past Sunday.
“I’m going to Penn State 7-v-7 camp this coming weekend with my football team and I plan on going to South Carolina camp. That’s all so far,” Prunty said.
