In 2017, Lake Taylor traveled to Woodbridge, Virginia to take on the Freedom Eagles. The Titans took a 58-7 loss.
On Saturday, the Titans had the opportunity to redeem themselves and they followed through. The game was nip and tuck for a while as the Eagles refused to fold. Lake Taylor pulled away for a 42-28 win.
“We worked hard all week. We prepared for this,” said Lake Taylor QB Jeff Foster. “We had the same mindset (we always have): be humble and hungry.”
Wide receiver and defensive back Javon Harvey had a hand in leading his team to a win. Harvey scored two touchdowns on Saturday, including a thrilling catch and run for 77 yards and a score.
“It was a big moment. We had to step up,” said Harvey after the game. “We wanted to get back at them. Last year, they demolished us. We had to.”
“We still gotta work. We still have better teams to play. We gotta finish the year out strong, game by game,” Harvey explained. “Overall (today) we played together, like a team. We expect to get better, grow stronger… get harder.”
Running back Malik Newton won the Buffalo Wild Wings Player of the Week award in the previous week for his 17 carry, 154 yard performance with three TDs and a 2-point conversion in a 50-15 win over Western Branch. Against Freedom, he added two touchdowns and proved himself a tough back to corral.
“We were hungry. We’ve been grinding the whole week trying to get ready for this game and get some payback for last year,” said Newton. “(The win) is going to boost our confidence, but at the end of the day, we’re going to stay humble, keep grinding and take it one game at a time to get ready for states.”
