Maryland’s loss is Liberty’s gain.
Tayvion “Tank” Land (2019 CB 5-8 165) verbally committed to Maryland last May. Assistant Coach Chris Beatty wooed Land to commit to the Terps and that commitment was locked in.
The scandal surrounding Maryland Football and the subsequent dismissal of head coach D.J. Durkin may have been the beginning of the end for Land’s commitment to the Terps (or vice versa).
New head coach Mike Locksley was hired and every member of Durkin’s staff was either dismissed or found a job with another football program. Chris Beatty made the leap to Pittsburgh.
In a classy move, Tayvion refused to look in the rear view mirror and discuss Maryland on Wednesday. Instead, he focused on his new college home, Liberty.
“Coach Freeze came past my house last Tuesday. We talked. I took my official visit that same weekend. They kept it real with me and don’t care bout my height,” said Land
Tayvion stands at around 5-8 and that might have been a sticking point for Locksley. Land had taken a visit to Maryland in the last weekend of January and was still committed the Terrapins at that point.
Ocean Lakes head coach Joe Jones helped Tayvion find options after Maryland pulled out.
“Tank and Tre’ Clark from Manchester are pretty good friends and they’re set up to be difference makers at Liberty,” said Jones. “It was kind of a whirlwind over the last nine days. Tank landed at a great university that really, truly wanted him there. They got an excellent football player.”
Now, will Liberty get a shot at playing Maryland sometime in the next four years? That could be interesting.
