For the region, the pairing of Maury and Ocean Lakes was a winner.
We had the defending Region 5A champion visiting the defending Region 6A champion. Both teams have state title aspirations again this year.
As for the game, Ocean Lakes came out swinging.
The Dolphins successfully executed an onside kick and converted on a short field with a three-yard touchdown run by Kai Hodge with 9:41 remaining in the first quarter.
Maury didn’t answer until 2:20 left in the first quarter when a 1-yard touchdown run by Dajon Evans put the Commodores on the board. Maury led 7-6.
Ocean Lakes wouldn’t score again.
Maury rattled off 31 straight points, including a 98-yard C.J. Beasley touchdown run that sealed the win with 5:20 left in the game.
Overall, Maury survived the opening haymaker and controlled the game for the remaining 44 minutes of regulation time.
Beasley scored three touchdowns on the night, and the 98-yard touchdown run boosted his total to 230 yards rushing on the night.
“They’re a good team with a good coach,” Maury head coach Dyrri McCain said after the win. “They’re a playoff team. In order to take that next step and get over the hump, we’re going to have to play teams like that. I want to thank (Ocean Lakes) for accepting the challenge.”
Virginia Tech commit C.J. Beasley proved his worth on Friday night, taking the pressure off of quarterback E.J. Gibson and the Maury passing game.
“The kid is special. If anybody doesn’t see that, I don’t know what’s wrong with them. He’s special. He’s not the only one. There are other guys around him who help him out. Our offensive line did a great job blocking. He’s a dynamic and special player.”
Maury moves to 6-0 on the season and will most certainly retain the top seed in Region 5A. Next, the Commodores visit Wilson (1-5).
Ocean Lakes may see their power rating take a hit, but not much with a quality loss. They’re currently the #1 seed in Region 6A, but Oscar Smith won Friday night 49-0 against King’s Fork.
The Dolphins (5-2) get no rest next week as they visit Salem (6-0). The SunDevils are chasing Maury for the top seed in Region 5A,
