Since a transfer from Granby to Maury in the summer of 2019, and since he has risen to the position of QB1 at Maury High School, Eric Gibson (2021 QB 6-0 175) has certainly made a statement that should have college coaches sitting up and taking notice.
Now that Maury is 13 games into the season and still going, E.J. is 187 of 249 passing for 3,123 yards and 38 touchdowns as the quarterback for the Commodores in his junior season.
Toledo certainly took notice. Running backs coach Nate Cole made an offer to Gibson Wednesday morning, just days away from Maury’s state semifinal game vs. Varina High School.
“I am thankful to God and my teammates and coaches. Everyday, they push me to be my best. Although more may come, I will focus on executing and winning games and continue to be humble. There are some tough teams ahead,” said Gibson. “Toledo is a good school. They spread the ball out and I like to throw. It could be a good spot. It came out of the blue, but I have sent my film to a good amount of coaches so there is a chance they have seen my film before.”
Toledo is a Division I Group of Five school playing in the MAC against programs like Central Michigan, Buffalo, Kent State and Akron. The Rockets finished the season bowl eligible with a 6-6 record, but at the bottom of the West Division of their conference.
As for Gibson’s college prospects, is game film speaks for itself. His stat line is gaudy. Once the season is done, you can bet that Gibson will attract even more interest and offers. With their offer, Toledo gets a head start on their competition, and there will be plenty of competition for his commitment once all is said and done.
