Late last week, Nansemond River head coach Justin Conyers confirmed that his speedy DB/RB and special teamer Kevin Johnson picked up his first college scholarship offer.
Johnson got the offer from Virginia State.
“I’m excited he finally got what he deserves. Kevin is a great player and has been a huge part of the success at Nansemond River for the last two seasons. I’m sure more offers will come. The goal is to go to college for free and I’m happy he is able to accomplish that goal,” said the coach.
Nansemond River was the Region 5A Champion in 2017 and they managed a 7-3 season and a return to the playoffs in 2018. In the last two season, the Warriors have been 17-8 with Johnson as one of the leaders of the team.
Coach Conyers has a deep relationship with Kevin.
“I’ve coached him since 8th grade and we always knew he was going to be a scholarship kid. He was one of our leaders and a tough kid. We have watched him grow and get better throughout the years. He has an excellent support system at home and has done everything we have asked of him. Whatever college he picks is going to get a great player and a great young man,” said the coach.
Johnson is an All-State track athlete and he was selected as a First Team All-Southeastern District athlete in his senior season. The All-Region teams have not been selected yet, so there’s certainly the possibility of more post-season honors (and scholarship offers) to come.
