The Crimson Wave made the trip down 460 to square off with the Greyhounds of I.C. Norcom on Saturday afternoon. Norcom was able to get off to a hot start and never looked back, as they handed Petersburg its first loss of the season 42-22.
The win came in head coach Robert Jackson’s first game coaching for the Greyhounds. Jackson left Salem High School several years ago to become Norcom’s AD. He added head football coach to his duties this off-season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After forcing Petersburg to a quick three and out, Norcom’s Karon Prunty returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown, giving the Greyhounds their first touchdown of the 2019 season and putting them on top 7-0 (PAT- Tywman-Buxton). After forcing a Petersburg turnover Norcom would find the end zone once again. Senior quarterback Jacoby Smith connected with Maurice Outten on a 9-yard touchdown pass on 4th and 5 (PAT- Tywman-Buxton).
Karon Prunty would pick off Meziah Scott towards the end of the first period and the Greyhounds were able to put a field goal on the board (23-yards- Tywman-Buxton). Down 17-0, Petersburg struck back on its ensuing drive. Meziah Scott found Teon Harris on a 40-yard touchdown bomb (2 pt. Conv. Good) bringing the score to 17-8. However, Norcom found a hole in Petersburg’s
secondary, on its next possession, and Smith would throw his second touchdown of the afternoon, this time to Daunte Brown (PAT-No Good).
Coming out of the break, Petersburg forced Norcom to a three and out, but a fumble by Upton Bailey gave the ball right back to the Greyhounds. A few plays later, Karon Prunty would be the recipient of Smith’s third touchdown pass of the day (2pt Conv. No Good). Upton Bailey would redeem himself on the next drive as he scored from one-yard out (2 pt. Conv. Good) which cut Norcom’s lead back to 13 (29-16).
Demonte Dunlap caught Smith’s fourth touchdown pass (PAT Tywman-Buxton) on Norcom’s next possession, but it was quickly followed up by a Meziah Scott 10-yard touchdown run (2pt Conv. No Good) bringing the score to 36-22 with nine minutes remaining in the contest. Dunlap would score once again on a four-yard touchdown run (PAT-No Good), closing the door on a Crimson Wave comeback.
Jacoby Smith finished the day 12 for 14 passing for 239 yards and 4 touchdown tosses. Karon Prunty led the Greyhound with two receptions, both for touchdowns, for a total of 79 receiving yards, plus a 50 yard punt return for a touchdown and an interception.
Petersburg returns home next week and will look to bounce back against another 757 foe, Booker T. Washington. I.C. Norcom travels to Hopewell for a rematch from last year’s second round Division 3 Region A matchup.
