It was only two years ago that word of a Tabb transfer to Phoebus was generating major buzz throughout the Peninsula District. It was right around the time the Phantoms were preparing a farewell for Andre Jackson, Deshawn Pope and Johnathan Gregory among other talented prospects throughout their secondary. The Tabb transfer was sophomore defensive back Latrelle Smith. Since the summer of 2017, Smith has given many defensive/offensive coordinators in the Peninsula District fits in trying to prepare for what he can deliver on both sides
On January 21, Smith (2019 DB/WR 5-10 175) received an offer from Youngstown State and it seemed as though the Ohio-based program had the inside track of receiving a commitment out of the Phoebus product. That was until Coach Mike London and the Tribe extended an offer to Smith last Thursday. After mulling his options over the weekend, Smith decided to pull the trigger on William & Mary.
“It was a great offer football and academics wise,” Smith told recruit757. “Coach Mike London and his staff showed me so much love and made me feel like family. They are also setting me up for bigger and better things beyond the football life.”
Smith did most of his damage on the defensive side of the ball for the Phantoms this year accumulating six interceptions and 18 pass breakups. Prior to his commitment Smith also held collegiate offers from the Naval Academy, Hampton and Morgan State.
Starting wide receiver Barry Hargraves (2019 WR 6-0 195) was a day before Latrelle Smith in making his commitment. Hargraves solidified his position on the offensive side of the ball during the 2016 football season alongside Andre Jackson. After Jackson left for Virginia State, Hargraves became the main target for starting quarterback Chris Daniels. In 2017, Hargraves accumulated 876 receiving yards on 46 receptions and 11 touchdowns. Last season he increased his production going for 1,031 receiving yards on 48 receptions for 18 touchdowns including four rushing touchdowns.
On January 19, Hargraves picked up an offer from Delaware State University. This past Sunday, Hargraves ended his recruitment by committing to the Hornets.
“Having Barry come through the program as an eighth grader, I always knew that he would have a great career here at Phoebus,” Coach Jeremy Blunt stated.
“He instantly made an impact down on JV and that truth him all the way through his senior year. ‘Special’ is a word that must be used when you describe this kid. He was a young man that always did it the right way at home, in school on the field and in the community. He is the total package and I know that he will do great things in life. I have no doubt.”
Hargraves and Smith are the first prospects of the 2019 class to announcement their intentions after graduation. On December 28, starting offensive lineman Donovan Cooper (2019 OL 6-1 270) condensed his offer list to just five programs. A commitment should be expected at any moment from now all the way up to National Signing Day.
