Josh Blalock is back to lead Portsmouth Christian.
In 2018, Coach Ryan Mann led the Patriots to a 3-6 record and he stepped down after the season. Blalock will move up from his assistant coaching role to take over as head coach once again. He started the football program there in 2007 and coached for the first five years.
“We had good success those years making it to back-to-back state semifinals,” said Blalock of the early years of PCS Football. “We have hired Nat Aydlet to be my defensive coordinator. He won back-to-back titles as the head coach at Atlantic Shores. He also coached at Augusta Christian and helped guide them to a state title, so that was a big time hire. I’ve also hired one of my former players to help coach the lines in Peter Eates.”
The talent is there for a turn around. The VISAA Division III playoffs are in reach, and that achievement would go a long way toward giving the program a boost.
“We have Second Team VISAA All-State Quarterback Alex Green back. He threw for 1,000 yards and 12 TDS in 7 games last season. We also have Taijon Yorkshire, who transferred in from Tallwood High School. He made the All-757 Junior team as a Kick returner and he will do a little bit of everything for us, including wide receiver, running back and defensive back,” Blalock reported. “We have Brunye Thomas coming over from Lake Taylor who we expect to be a star running back for us. Our leading tackler from last year, Rylan Riddick, returns at middle linebacker. We have a couple of key linemen returning in Ashtin Ancheta (2022 OL 6-1 300), Daniel Kim (2020 DT 6-1 240) and Gavin Hughes (2020 DT/OG 6-0 240). We also have a couple of wide receivers in Travis Towns (2021 WR 5-10 160) and Chase Stoneman (2020 WR/LB 6-2 170) who have made huge strides in weight room and on the field.”
We’ll get to see more of Portsmouth Christian in late July and into August as practice officially opens. The season opener for Portsmouth Christian falls on Saturday, August 24 as the Patriots hit the road to visit defending VISAA Division II state champions Fredericksburg Christian.
