Dante Gooden is now in the spotlight.
Now coming into his junior season, Gooden (2022 LB 5-10 180) looks for an increased role in the Landstown Football program.
“I have to work a lot more to get where I want to be,” Gooden said. “Today’s camp was good, but I can do better.”
“This is a way to get better without going too far deep into it. You’ll know if you’re good at it or not,” Dante stated. “Football means everything (to me). This is what I want to do for a living. I will always love football, no matter what happens.
Landstown is known for many things, but one keystone in the history of the Eagles football program is the legend of Percy Harvin. Harvin was a one-man show at times in high school, and he led Landstown to two state title appearances, winning one in his time there. Harvin went on to play for the Florida Gators and in the NFL.
How does Percy’s shadow affect players like Dante at Landstown 15 years later?
“It’s hard (to live up to the legacy), but I think I’ll get there,” he said.
The Eagles haven’t seen a state championship game since Harvin’s run, but the Eagles have veteran coaching leadership with Tommy Reamon at the helm. The 2020 football season is still not a certainty, but you can bet the players are anxious to get on the field.
Landstown will be reloaded and they’ll face some stiff competition at the beach. How does Dante see it?
“This 2020 season is going to be weird. I don’t know exactly (how it’s going to go). I’m going to try my best on everything I can.”
