The Salem Sun Devils made yet another deep playoff run in 2019, and the vaunted defense was a key to their success once again.
Andrew Washington was a part of that defensive effort and the senior linebacker has made his college commitment.
A visit to Division III Bridgewater College was enough to convince Washington to lock in with the Eagles.
“The coaching staff made me feel at home and gave me that passion for the game again because if it wasn’t for them I don’t know where I’d be right now,” Washington said. “I wasn’t getting looks like I wished. I made the best of my opportunities when I could. I talked to Coach Smith, who recrtuited me. We talked for a while and kept in touch. After that, I ended up going on four visits and to two football games there.”
The relationship with Bridgewater didn’t happen overnight. Washington and Coach Craig Smith, who is also the recruiting coordinator, spent a lot of time together. Bridgewater is a smaller school with less than 2000 students. That allows the coaches to be even more hands on, and it can mean a tighter knit campus.
In addition to his opportunity at Bridgewater, Andrew also had options with Lagrange, Wingate, Shenandoah, Averett and North Carolina A&T.
“All I want to do is play ball again and prove what everyone has been missing. They gave me that opportunity and I’m going to run with it,” said Andrew. “My Pops never gave up on me. He supported me through everything. He knows better then anyone what I’ve been through and what I had to deal with to get here.”
Andrew is proof of the advice we give at our camps, which he’s been a part of for years. There is a college home for everyone. He may not have gotten all the opportunities he wanted in his high school career, but his new college home opens a new chapter in his football career. Andrew seems to be determined to take advantage of it.
