The new Early Signing Period for high school football players makes National Signing Day a two-tiered affair.
Starting in 2017, the NCAA allowed high school football athletes to ink their NLI in December at the same time that Junior College athletes would sign with Division I institutions. Many of the top athletes in a signing class will commit and sign early, allowing the bigger college football programs an opportunity to lock up their class of commitments. There will still be some top talent uncommitted after the Early Signing Period, but most of the uncommitted seniors will follow through on the first Wednesday of February, just like everyone else used to.
On Wednesday morning at I.C. Norcom, without the pomp and circumstance of a signing ceremony, class of 2019 linebacker Taurus Jones (2019 LB 6-2 215) signed his NLI to James Madison. Taurus is the first of a deep senior class at Norcom to affirm his commitment. Cornerback Casaan Dixon, safety Thomas White, running back Demonte Dunlap and wide receiver Celon Lawrence are still uncommitted. Dixon, White and Dunlap were recently selected as All-Region athletes.
Jones was selected as the All-Region 3A Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a First Team All-State selection. Jones also held offers from Coastal Carolina, Central Florida, Old Dominion, Applachian State, Army, Fordham, Charlotte, Norfolk State, Hampton, Howard, Richmond, Campbell, Grambling, and North Carolina Central.
Taurus joins another solid recruiting class at James Madison that includes C.J. Jackson (RB-Hermitage) and Rick D’Abreu (DE-Thomas Dale) as in-state commitments.
James Madison formally presented Curt Cignetti to the media on Monday as their new head coach after the departure of Mike Houston. Houston led the Dukes to a National Championship in the 2016 season and a title game appearance in the 2017 season. Houston took the head coaching position at East Carolina and Cignetti comes to the program after improving the football program at Elon.
