It wasn’t planned, but it couldn’t have been scripted any better. Lake Taylor athlete Marquise Poole attempted his second field goal of the season and saved the day for the Titans. The Norfolk team hadn’t led all day, but they had the lead when it counted.
The play was set up by a series of setbacks that had the Titans fighting back. They found it hard to generate yardage as they found themselves behind to the Wolverines by a score of 14-0 at halftime. The Titans posted only 128 yards of offense in the half, but had a plan to turn the tide in the second.
To start the second half, Lake Taylor scored on their first two possessions to even the score. Brandon Moore scored on a 21-yard run, and on the subsequent possession, Delmon Williams connected with Jakale Pinkney on a 38-yard TD pass that evened the score at 14. The Titans had their swagger back.
North Stafford answered early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jalen Sarratt scampered for a 32-yard touchdown run. Lake Taylor answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Moore. A penalty on the Wolveriness gave the Titans the ball at the one for the extra point attempt and Titan coach Hank Sawyer decided to go for two. The running play was stopped and the Titans found themselves trailing 21-20. Still, they had momentum with 3:02 left.
The Wolverines were stopped in their tracks on the ensuing drive and the Titans got the ball back with 1:50 left in the game. They drove into the red zone and had time to attempt the kick with 5.7 seconds left. The attempt was good, leaving 1.1 seconds left to run out the clock. The ensuing kickoff killed the clock and the Titans now move on to play in Charlottesville for the Division 5 State Championship.
Final: Lake Taylor 23, North Stafford 21
Division 5 State Championship: Lake Taylor (14-0) vs. Stone Bridge (14-0), Saturday, December 8, Noon, Scott Stadium, UVA
