It is now official.
There will be no sports in the fall for public schools in Virginia.
On Monday morning, the VHSL Executive Committee approved Model 3 as the return to sports and activities plan for the 2020-2021 academic year. The vote was 34-1 in favor.
The plan will be implemented if Virginia stays in Phase 3 or progresses beyond Phase 3. All plans are subject to change.
This structure would leave all sports in the season where they are aligned, but the sports seasons would be abbreviated. Winter sports would start on December 14 and run until February 20. The first contest date would be December 28.
The fall sports season would slide to a February 15 start date with a first contest date of March 1. The season would end on May 1. That would make the first football Friday night on March 5.
Spring sports would start on April 12 and run to June 26. The first contest could be played on April 26.
“We all understand the physical and mental health benefits of getting our students back to a level of participation. The Condensed Interscholastic Plan Leaves open the opportunity to play all sports in all three seasons if Virginia moves beyond Phase III and/or Phase III guidelines are revised and High Risk Activities are allowed,” said VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “This plan also allows schools the opportunity to open the year and get school started and deal with issues such as schedules, academic plans, transportation, dealing with possible outbreaks of COVID in the school.
“The VHSL will continue to work closely with the best available information and directives provided by the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).” Haun said.
Obviously, this creates an overlap between the sports seasons, so multi-sport athletes could go without a break and might have to determine when they’ll transition from one sport season to the next.
There is no official word on a post-season for the various sports, but it’s expected that each sport will have a shortened season with an altered playoff structure if there is one.
