Princess Anne defensive back Tony Grimes announced his decision in front of friends and family on Tuesday afternoon.
Grimes sat in front of caps for Georgia, UNC, Ohio State and Texas A&M. Grimes gave a no nonsense speech, donned a Tar Heels cap, and the crowd cheered.
“I have a lot of trust in Coach Dre (Bly) and Coach (Jay) Bateman. I feel like Coach Bateman is going to put me in the right position, the position to be great, and I feel like I can go there and be the man,” Grimes said. “I’ve seen how Coach Bateman coaches his defense and I’m getting trained by Dre Bly. Dre did it in the 757, he did it at UNC and he did it in the league. He’s a Hall of Famer (and a) Pro Bowler.”
Dre Bly played his high school ball at Western Branch and had a long NFL career in addition to playing for the Tar Heels. Since his arrival at UNC in 2019, after Mack Brown was hired for the second time as UNC head football coach, Bly has intently recruited the 757 as his own backyard. The successful recruitment of Grimes is a statement for his reputation as a coach and as a recruiter.
“I really didn’t hear from UNC until Dre got there. Once Dre got there, he reached out to me while I was at Texas A&M on a visit and he gave me the offer,” Tony admitted. “(The process) is a gift and a curse. When it starts, you’re going to love it. All the (photo) edits and all the people hitting you up, but then it gets tiring. So I was most definitely ready to get it over with.”

Congratulations to Tony and his family on a successful recruitment! Grimes, paired with former Oscar Smith DB/QB Cam’ron Kelly and former Hampton Crabber athlete Dazz Newsome, now give the Tar Heels a foothold for recruiting in the 757. Expect Tony to turn around and use his commitment to pull other talented players in for the recruiting class of 2021.
