Past adversity used to fuel Warwick’s 42-0 crushing of Kecoughtan

Three weeks ago the Raiders nearly hit rock bottom.
Lake Taylor came through two weeks prior and thoroughly handed it to them by way of a 47-12 victory. Hampton rallied late to come away with a slight two-point victory a week after and then Woodside was the icing on the cake knocking off Warwick 21-0.
Since then, the Raiders have been able to reel off three-consecutive victories including having their way with a falling Kecoughtan program on Thursday night by the score of 42-0. Warwick’s current three-game winning streak is just the ninth of its kind over the course of the last 20 seasons. However, Warwick head coach Corey Hairston doesn’t attribute to the Raiders success to any huge changes made since losing to Woodside.
“Really there’s been no change,” Coach Hairston explained. “You look at the record of the first four games and they were tough teams. But I know that we’re a good team and sometimes it takes a little adversity for you to understand that you are a good team.”
Early on, both teams had a hard time moving the ball up and down the field. That was until Jalen Coles struck gold for the Raiders capping off a 63-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Coles set up his own touchdown run with a 33-yard pitch that carried Warwick all the way down to the Kecoughtan goal line.
Warwick began to move the ball with efficiency at the 10:40 mark in the second quarter, but eventually turned the ball over on downs in the red zone.
Down 7-0, Marvin McCue started to will the Warriors downfield. But a Kenyon Thorne interception put the Raiders up 14-0 after a 52-yard return for a touchdown. Israel Wellons made it a double on the Warriors next possession picking off McCue and returning it 18 yards for the third score of the day.
Elijah Smith began to light it up for Warwick spelling Derick Nixon during multiple points in the contest. The Raiders quarterback showed up big late in the second quarter for Warwick finding
Kysaun Jones for a 31-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 28-0.
Halftime didn’t slow the Raiders down in the slightest.
They came out more aggressive than they did in the first quarter eating up almost six minutes of game clock ending with Derick Nixon finding pay dirt from one yard out.
Warwick would go on to add another touchdown late in the fourth quarter when Elijah Smith connected with Jayden Watkins for five yards and a score ballooning its lead to 42-0.
The Raiders (4-3) used a heavy dose of running with Jalen Coles and Derick Nixon doing most of the heavy lifting. Bryce Buchanan was incorporated into the ground game early, however; his evening was cut short as he could be seen on the sideline with his pads removed.
All hands will need to be on deck next week as Warwick matches up with Phoebus (4-1). The Phantoms will be looking to extend their winning streak to five games after a matchup with Denbigh (0-6) on Saturday at Todd Stadium.
Meanwhile, with six losses at this point, Kecoughtan (1-6) will have to play out its remaining schedule knowing that there’s virtually no chance at playoff contention this season. Things don’t get easier with Woodside (6-0) on the schedule next week. The Wolverines take battle Menchville (2-3) on Friday night and have yet to surrender points to any program in the Peninsula District thus far.
