News is coming in daily from Western Branch High School where college coaches have been visiting frequently. The Bruins have no less than eight seniors who look to be bound for college football. Josh Marriner is the headliner, but he’s already committed to UConn. The remaining seniors are seeing plenty of interest from schools big and small.
Western Branch Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Jarome Bell has been on top of the visits and interest that have been flowing in. Coach Bell is proud of the system that he’s built for tracking his players and attracting offers for them. “(Coach) Pete Shaw from Ferrum College said that we have the best recruiting program in high school that he has seen,” said Bell.
Bruin lineman Chris Hancock has attracted a lot of interest now that the season is over. At 6-3 255, Hancock has a great frame to build on, and college coaches can see the skill that he could bring into a college program. Hancock holds offers from Bridgewater and Alderson-Broaddus, plus he’s pulling in interest from Air Force, Campbell, Ferrum, Christopher Newport, VMI, Norfolk State, Hampton, Elon, NC Wesleyan, and Central Connecticut State.
“Linebacker William Thompson went on a visit to Air Force this past summer and was visited by Coach Bolton last week. VMI is strongly in the mix along with Carnegie Mellon, William & Mary, and Bucknell,” Bell reported. Thompson holds offers from Ferrum and Bridgewater.
“Coaches from Howard, Hampton, Central Connecticut State, Elon, Lehigh, Coastal Carolina, Norfolk State, Appalachian State, and NC Wesleyan have all called about the availability of Brandon Addison,” said Bell. Addison played ball for the Bruins in his freshman and sophomore seasons, played his junior year at Nansemond-Suffolk, then came back to Western Branch for his senior season.
Bruin quarterback C.J. Thomas is getting interest from HBCU Cheyney University, who runs a spread option offense, which would be a great fit for Thomas now that he’s used to running Greg Gibson’s offense at Western Branch. Thomas has interest from Christopher Newport, plus offers from Ferrum, Bridgewater and Alderson-Broaddus.
First team All-District Linebacker K.J. Holland holds an offer from Chowan and Ferrum, and he’s getting interest from Campbell and Christopher Newport.
Appalachian St, NC Wesleyan, Bridgewater, Hampton and Randolph Macon have all contacted Western Branch about Donte Shepard. Daquan Pittman has an offer from Alderson-Broaddus and interest from Ferrum.
Howard and East Carolina are high on lineman Thomas Coleman.
“I received a call from Ted White, the Offensive Coordinator from Howard University inquiring about offensive guard Thomas Coleman,” Bell reported. “Coach White thought he was a Senior and wanted to know if they still had a chance to get him. I told him that he could because he’s only a Junior.”
“Also Coach (John) Wiley from ECU came in unexpectedly last week and said his offensive line coach had seen Thomas’ film. They also thought he was a senior, and told Wiley since he was already down here checking on their 2013 commits to get over here and see if they still had a chance to get Thomas. Once again, they were elated to know he was only a Junior and invited him and Terrence Ricks to their Junior Day after signing day is over. Wiley also told Ricks (since he’s s track star too) that he would let the track coach know and he may have the possibility of doing both.” Ricks is also getting interest from Richmond and Duke. He’s been invited to summer camps at both schools.
Linebacker/Punter Forrest Bailey holds offers from Alderson-Broaddus and Bridgewater.
Athlete Daiquan Lawrence is attracting significant interest as a rising senior. Duquesne, James Madison and Duke have all offered summer camp invites.
The Western Branch program is on the rise after their first playoff season in years. There are plenty of young athletes in the program and plenty of reason to believe that the Bruins will continue to be very competitive in the years to come.
