It was a game that no one wanted to lose. In the end, the Woodside Wolverines outlasted the Warwick Raiders, moving on to a 2-1 record while the Raiders fell to an unexpected 0-3. The loss now puts the Raiders in a hole if they’re going to make the playoffs.
The game was so slow to develop, fans had to wonder if any offense was coming. At halftime, Woodside led 6-0 on a 19-yard touchdown run by Jay’Quan Lassiter in the first quarter. In the third quarter, the offenses started to come around. The scoring picked up when Woodside punched in their second touchdown of the game as Quincy Jones scampered in for a 10-yard touchdown. Warwick answered when running back Cardon Johnson scored from 20 yards out to end the third quarter.
The action was hot and heavy in the fourth quarter. Woodside scored twice in the quarter, only to have Warwick answer each time, all in the last six minutes of the game.
Woodside’s Tyris Walker ripped off an 85-yard touchdown run, only to have Cardon Johnson follow it with a 75-yard touchdown run of his own. Woodside seemingly finished the game off with a two-yard touchdown run by Lassiter with a little more than a minute to go, only to have Warwick answer with a Josh Butler 20-yard touchdown pass to William Turner with 20 seconds left in the game.
Warwick attempted an onside kick, but failed. The Wolverines took a knee on the last play of the game and escaped with a hard fought victory.
Cardon Johnson led the Raiders with 152 yards rushing on 13 carries with two touchdowns. For the first game this season, Tyris Walker was not Woodside’s leading rusher. Jay’Quan Lassiter finished with 135 yards and two touchdowns while Walker rushed for 105 yards and a score.
Warwick drops to 0-3 and visits Kecoughtan (1-2) next Thursday while Woodside (2-1) hosts Hampton (2-0) next Friday night.
