For the fourth annual Big River Rivalry, the day started out overcast and blustery. By the end of the afternoon, the sun shined brightly, and it shined brightest on the stars of the North team.
Early on, it looked like the North would run away with the game, but the South hung on.
An interception by Ja’Kari Williams of Douglas Freeman on the first play from scrimmage became a pick six called back due to a penalty. The North started their first possession on the South’s 47-yard line, but the drive ended on downs at the South 35.
The North’s next possession would start at their own 25. On the third play, Quarterback Juwan Carter of Highland Springs connected with C.J. Jones of Varina for a 73-yard score. The PAT was missed, but the North led 6-0.
The South immediately answered with an 8-play, 67-yard drive for a touchdown capped by a William Noble (James River) 4-yard run. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 6.
In the second quarter, Jordan Hall (Hermitage) scored on a four-yard run and Juwan Carter rolled right and scored the two-point conversion on the run to make the score 14-6 with 6:50 left in the half.
Again, the South had an answer. This on came defensively as Huckeeve Bailey (Petersburg) scooped up a fumble and scored on a 39-yard run. Josh Chisholm (Blessed Sacrament) caught a pass from Matt Lawson (Thomas Dale) for the two point conversion and the score was knotted again with 3:55 left in the first half.
From there, all hell broke loose.
The North scored 28 more points in the second quarter to put up 36 total in the frame.
C.J. Jones had a 12-yard run for a TD. Tanner Dobrucky (Douglas Freeman) caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Juwan Carter. Ja’Kari Williams had a 50-yard pick six that counted this time. The North finished off the first half with a Hail Mary thrown by John Damgard (St. Christopher’s) caught by Khali Andrews (Thomas Jefferson) for a 49-yard touchdown.
In the second half, the North tacked on 17 more points on a Jake Johnston (Collegiate) 20-yard FG, an 8-yard TD pass from Juwan Carter to John Damgard, and a 41-yard TD pass from Carter to Dobrucky.
“The young men that we had play for us, they did a great job,” said Henrico head coach Gerald Glasco, who headed the North squad. “They were so good. They had character, work ethic, they did a great job all week retaining the information we were trying to give them. It was just a blessing to have them.”
The game was a celebration of 804 Football and the senior talent of the region. There were players on the field with dozens of offers and there were players on the field who might have played the last game of their football career. Either way, all of the players gave a huge effort that was appreciated by the fans that attended.
The Big River Rivalry wrapped up with a celebration of both teams on the field as the players were surrounded by their parents and fans. Photos were taken and friendships made during the week were cemented.
Frank Boyd led the South with 84 yards rushing on 6 carries. Juwan Carter was 9 for 18 passing for 244 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for the North team.
We’ll have more from the day including a full photo gallery and a recap video, very soon here on recruit804.com.
