The rumor mill was churning over the weekend that L.C. Bird Athletic Director David Bedwell would be coming out of a two-year hiatus from football to become the next Head Coach at Hermitage.
On Monday, the rumors were officially confirmed.
Bedwell will inherit a Panther program that went 1-9 under the direction of Derrick Johnson, who resigned at the conclusion of the 2018 season. The Panthers averaged 6.2 points/game on offense and their defense surrendered a whopping 41 points/game. Their lone win came against J.R Tucker.
Over the course of Coach Bedwell’s 20-year career, he has recorded 203 career victories and has captured three consecutive state titles (L.C. Bird: 2012, 2013, 2014) and a state runner-up (Henrico:1999). Sources close to Bedwell stated that he simply missed coaching football and believed that it is what he was meant to do.
When asked about Bedwell’s move to Hermitage, current Skyhawks Head Coach Troy Taylor stated, “Bedwell gave me my first coaching job right out of college as his JV line coach. He hired me to come back to L.C. Bird to be the Head Coach. We are all very sad to see him go, but we understand that he is a coach at heart, and he is doing what he loves to do. We wish him nothing but the best at Hermitage as their Head Coach.”
Rome was not built in a day and it will take some time for Bedwell and his staff to right the ship at Hermitage, but if there is one man that is up for the challenge, its David Bedwell.
