Highland Springs has been taking care of business to start the football season and the last to performances are right in line with the expectations grounded throughout the summer months. They’ve knocked off Hermitage and Woodside by a combined score of 103-6 and are off to their defense defensive start to a season since 1990.
A strong component of their makeup has been the ability to run the ball effectively with multiple prospects vying for handoffs out of the backfield. Over the first two games we’ve seen Shy’Re McKeiver carry most of the load with Ahman Foster-Powell (2019 RB 6-0 220) being peppered into the mix among others. Rayquan Smith (2019 RB 5-9 200) has seen a slash in his carries due to being to a hamstring injury that followed him into the regular season. Be that as it may, Smith didn’t let his hamstring get in the way of committing to Norfolk State over the weekend. After Norfolk State took care of business against Virginia State on Saturday evening, Smith decided it was time for him to take care of some business of his own.
“[Norfolk State] was the first school to offer me. They believed in me and I appreciate Coach Latrell Scott for giving me a chance. They already have four Springer alumni, they have great team and it’s going build every year,” Smith told recruit804.
Smith decided to make his commitment at the beginning of the season so he could put more focus into football and his academics. The Highland Springs product picked up offers from St. Andrews University, St. Augustine University and Norfolk State was the first program to come around with a collegiate offer back in April. Last year Smith ran for 632 yards on 97 carries and five touchdowns. Thus far, his number hasn’t been called that much only rushing for seven total yards on two carries through two games this season.
“It has been up and down for me, but I feel great and I’m ready for Meadowbrook this Friday,” Smith stated.
