On Saturday, Highland Springs wrapped up its four-consecutive Class 5 state championship putting Coach Loren Johnson in the same breath as Mike Smith and Bill Dee. To start the week, the Springers have, in part, been the talk of the Central Region with team captain Christian White and Keeron Henderson picking up collegiate offers. Starting running back Shy’re McKeiver can now be lumped into the group of prospects beginning to give local collegiate programs something to think about amid the early signing period.
On Tuesday evening, McKeiver picked up his first collegiate offer from Virginia State. Should he commit, McKeiver come find himself connecting with former Springers De’Andre Henderson and David Goodwyn.
“It feels great,” McKeiver told recruit804. “I never really thought this moment would come.”
The Trojans are creating a pipeline to Highland Springs which could see a large contingent of Springers signing on with Virginia State. Keeron Henderson, A.J. Wells, Jai’Veon Smalls, Devyn Coles, and Tremayne Talbert are among the notables that currently hold an offer from Virginia State.
Over the last few years, McKeiver has shared time out of the backfield with Rayquan Smith, Ahman Foster-Powell, Rell Coley and Jaiden Reavis among others. This past season he took more of a front seat role as the running back unit added Kalii Bradford into the mix. On Saturday against Stone Bridge, McKeiver was the second leading rusher on the day behind Foster-Powell accumulating 48 rushing yards on nine carries. His longest run of the day of 22 yards was only surpassed by Foster-Powell who collected a 27-yard run in the second quarter.
Not much interest has been shown in the direction of McKeiver, but the expectation is that this offer begins to open the eyes of some of the regional brass. The Highland Springs project had a visit scheduled for Wednesday morning with hopes that another offer will materialize.
