Immanuel Hickman shocks the college world by committing to the University of Cincinnati

It was all a dream. Immanuel Hickman once imagined himself sitting in front of a packed auditorium with his friends, family and football team present. There would probably be about five football caps present facing the audience as he seems like the kind of young man that likes to keep people guessing. If I were to take a gander at the collegiate caps sitting perpendicular to the audience I’d have to guess: Central Florida, James Madison, Richmond, East Carolina and Temple. What you have to understand about Immanuel is that while he’s longed for the chance to play close to home, there’s something about getting away from the Central Region and experiencing a different location.
Immanuel made it known how important it was to him to be able to get the type of love that only a college program from your home state could give. With that being said, my hypothesis is that Immanuel would’ve stood up in the Matoaca auditorium and unzipped his jacket. Underneath he would’ve donned a James Madison shirt while slipping on the James Madison cap verbally committing to JMU in front of everyone.
However, it didn’t quite work out like that.
“I had the whole dream of turning the hats around and having everyone guessing which program I was going to commit to. I had to earn the harsh reality that some people can do that and other people can’t. For me, I just couldn’t wait that long,” Immanuel told recruit804.
The harsh reality is that some prospects can’t that long to commit because sometimes those offers get snatched away should a program decide they’d like to rescind it. This is something that happens to numerous prospects each year and for various reasons. This is why Immanuel decided to announce his commitment this past week to the University of Cincinnati. There was no glitz and glamour. Immanuel didn’t set up an elaborate presentation explaining why he decided to go because at the end of the day that’s not what he does.
Immanuel is the type of young man that moves in silence and lets his play and character speak for itself. The funny thing is, it’s not that no one saw the way Immanuel committed coming, it’s the fact that he chose Cincinnati as the place he wanted to spend the next four years. A lot of people had Central Florida pegged as the choice of commitment. Even JMU seemed like a logical choice after the commitment of C.J. Jackson (Hermitage) last week. However, at the end of the day the decision to commit to the Bearcats was all about fit and comfort.

“Cincinnati is the school I chose because I felt the most at home there. Cincinnati has that southern-city feel. Honestly, I felt like I was right back at Matoaca when we landed. I noticed there was everything I needed right there in front of me. There’s Columbus, Dayton and Toledo right there in my backyard,” Immanuel stated.
Another reason that Immanuel was drawn to Cincinnati was the fact that he knew he would get the chance to play for Coach Luke Fickell. Growing up, Immanuel was a huge fan of Ohio State along with almost half of the entire Central Region. Coach Fickell spent time at Ohio State lending his expertise on the defensive side of the ball in a move that helped the buckeyes win the national championship in 2014.
“I knew how good he was calling his defense and drawing up good play designs while he was at Ohio State. I realized that if I was able to play under Coach Fickell he’d be able to help put me on the map anywhere. I’m a strong believer of if you feel very strong about something then you should probably go for it and that’s what I did,” Immanuel stated.
With his commitment out of the way, Immanuel now has time to focus on football and his senior season without the added pressure of having to decide which direction his recruitment will be going in. By committing to the Bearcats, Immanuel leaves many offers on the table including: Delaware, Marshall, JMU, Richmond, Buffalo, Temple, Navy, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Fordham, Liberty, Air Force, Towson, Central Florida and East Carolina. There’s always speculation that a prospect could go bac on his word as we see this each and every year. Be that as it may, Immanuel appears to be extremely committed to Cincinnati.
“The chances of me de-committing to Cincinnati are slim to none and that’s my final word on that subject. I’m not that big on people de-committing especially when it’s early in the process. I know that I’m now about to blow up even more this season. Heck, I’m about to go and play in Mexico. My chances of de-committing are slim to none,” Immanuel said.
