Two years after netting Juwan Carter, Norfolk State looks to secure Tremayne Talbert from Highland Springs

Coach Latrell Scott and the Spartans continue to keep their pipeline open that is connected directly to Highland Springs. Two years ago the Spartans were able to pick up Juwan Carter and Isaiah Winstead after the Springers collected their second of four-consecutive Class 5A state championships. As we continue to draw closer to National Signing Day, Norfolk State has extended its reach yet again this time with a defensive back on its radar.
Tremayne Talbert (2019 DB/WR 5-9 165) returned from injury this past season to help anchor the back seven of the Springers defense to help Highland Springs walk away with its fourth Class 5A state championship in as many years. The recruiting process for Talbert took a bit of a dive after his injury, but began to take a mind of its own during the summer prior to the 2018-2019 football season. On Thursday morning, Talbert announced the acquisition of his fourth collegiate offer from Norfolk State University.
“I feel good to have my first division I offer,” Talbert told recruit804. “It took a while but it was worth the wait. Coach Scott and I relationship is good as we’ve been communicating. He just had to figure where he wanted to put me in position wise.”
The idea is that Talbert will play either defensive back or wide receiver if he chooses to commit to Norfolk State. Wide receiver has been thrown in the mix based off of his performance over the course of this past season despite Talbert thoroughly excelling on the back half of the defense.
The defensive back unit for the Spartans is one comprised primarily of talent derived from Hampton Roads. With Coach Scott making a sincere effort to recruit in-house, we’ve seen prospects such as Johnathon Gregory (Phoebus), Bobby Price (Bishop Sullivan) and Shaviaea Williams (Granby) among others make the most of their opportunities. R.J. Coles was snagged from Varina at the beginning of the year who made his way into four games last season.
Bobby Price led all defensive backs in tackles with 59 while Nhyre Quinerly led all defensive backs in interceptions with three. Should Talbert decide to sign on with Norfolk State, he’ll receive every opportunity to make an impact on the Spartans defense. However, Talbert has also received collegiate offers from Virginia State, Virginia Union and Virginia University of Lynchburg. Thus far, he’s made no notion pertaining to if or when he will decide to commit to one of the four programs that have already offered him.
