Hopewell comes in as a #1 seed

The 804 does not have much representation in Group 3A but the few who have made the bracket are looking to take claim of the 3A title. Hopewell made its run last year and they are back as the number one seed this year. Here’s a look at Hopewell and the other 804 teams who will play this weekend in the 3A playoffs. Each faces a team from outside the area.
#1 Hopewell (7-3) – The Blue Devils are entering their second straight season as the number one seed in the 3A conference 26/28 playoffs. Hopewell came within one game of reaching the state championship for the first time since 2003. Their quest for a state title might not be very difficult in the opening weeks. Hopewell gets the benefit of facing an easier opponent in the opening round as they face Culpeper who is 3-7 and they will play either Petersburg or William Monroe in the second. The Blue Devil offense has been the key to its success as they are scoring 32.3 points a game. If the offense can continuing their high scoring performances then Hopewell has a great chance to appear in December.
#5 Petersburg (3-7) – With the new group classifications, it is not uncommon to see teams with losing records in the playoffs. Some may argue that a team does not deserve to move on but the Crimson Wave will be looking to prove the nay-sayers wrong. The playoffs can be considered as a restart and Petersburg has much to look forward. James Monroe is the number two seed in this bracket and they played Petersburg early in the season. The Crimson Wave came within five points short of beating the Yellow Jackets. That outcome should give hope to Petersburg as they look to advance throughout the bracket.
#6 Thomas Jefferson (4-5) – The Vikings are in the same position as the Crimson Wave. Their season did not go as expected but they have reached the playoffs. Unfortunately, most of the Vikings opponents are a class or two ahead of them. The tough competition should have prepared the Vikings for the 3A playoffs. Their first round match up, Brentsville, has eight wins but most coming against other 3A teams. Jefferson has seen tougher competition than Brentsville which might give them the edge even if they have a losing record.
#7 George Wythe (1-9) – The Bulldogs are here just because of the lack of teams in the conference. It is hard to make a case to say a team deserves to be in the playoffs with one win but the Bulldogs are in and they have the opportunity to win their first playoff game in school history. They will have a tough match up in the first round as James Monroe welcomes them to their home turf. Quality losses gave them power points, but don’t expect them to stick around long.
