Virginia Tech Head Coach Justin Fuente secured his first in-state commitment for the class of 2021 when Thomas Jefferson wide receiver Jaylen Jones (2021 6-1 185lbs) announced on Twitter Friday evening that he would be taking his talents to Blacksburg next fall. With the addition of Jones, Coach Fuente now has six verbal commitments for the class of 2021.
Landing a big name in-state prospect like Jones could lead to more commitments from other high-profile recruits in the commonwealth. Tristan Leigh (Robinson), Kelvin Gilliam (Highland Springs), and Naquan Brown (Ocean Lakes), are three prospects who come to mind that have Virginia Tech on their shortlist.
At one time, Jaylen held 16 offers before narrowing his list to five. He chose the Hokies over East Carolina, Pitt, Boston College, and Wake Forest. Jaylen hauled in 76 receptions for 1,369 yards and 18 touchdowns last fall. He was a First-Team All-State selection at receiver and helped guide his team to an appearance in the state semi-finals.
If Jones hold true to his commitment, he will have a great deal of support waiting for him in Blacksburg from the 804. Virginia Tech has five receivers listed on their roster from the greater Richmond area. Kaleb Smith (Louisa), Jaden Payoute (L.C. Bird), Tink Boyd (Trinity Episcopal), Sam Brooks (Goochland), and Conner Dusenbury (James River).
