Virginia State blankets Varina with offers for Barry Hill and James Reid

If the goal is for Stu Brown and his coaching staff is to produce more than a college student-athlete then the Blue Devils are well on their way of achieving what some don’t. In April, Varina held a late signing day that watched 10 students sign their NLI to attend college outside of Varina. This included Alton Costin, III who received a full scholarship to the College of William & Mary and also delivered an inspirational Commencement Address in front of his 2019 graduating class. Continuing with the trend of recruiting excellence over the weekend were both Barry Hill (2020 WR 5-10 150) and James Reid, Jr. (2020 SB/DB 5-9 175) who were able to secure an offer from Virginia State University.
“I couldn’t do anything but smile at the moment,” Reid explained. “I couldn’t believe it when it came out of his mouth that they had offered me a scholarship. I know a couple of guys down there and also some that are going in as a freshman that I played with last year.”
Should both Hill and Reid decide to commit to Virginia State, they’ll be welcomed by Trevon Epps who was also a part of the contingent that signed a NLI back in April to attend VSU.
Reid is looking to make the best of his opportunities as the summer continues to roll through. He’s beginning to gain interest from: Fordham, Georgetown, Maine, VMI, Norfolk State, Buffalo, and Charlotte among others. Most of the damage he was able to do last season came out of the slot, but he was also a dangerous threat out of the backfield and in the secondary for the Blue Devils defense. The goal this off-season for Reid has been to do whatever is necessary to continue to perfect his craft.
“I have been constantly going to the field and staying in the gym whenever I can outside of practice,” Reid stated. “I’ve also been perfecting my craft so that I can be the best at my position.”
Aside from Hill and Reid, Varina took its 7-on-7 team out to Virginia State over the weekend where the Blue Devils were able to make a notable impression on the field. Varina walked out of VSU as 7-on-7 champions and made sure to leave its mark at the VSU line camp also. Alonzo Ford (2020 DT 6-3 290), Isiah Paige (2020 WR/DB 5-8 160), and Lorenz Terry (2020 DE 6-4 230) are just a few other 2020 prospects that have accumulated offers for the Blue Devils throughout the off season.
