There are several hot matchups on the Southside tonight, with playoff implications abounding. There are four undefeated teams left on the Southside, and only one is in action Friday night. Not every eye will be focused on Grassfield’s game against Lakeland however.
The Sonny Merchant era at Gloucester High School is over. Merchant stepped down as the Dukes’ head coach yesterday, citing personal reasons. Yesterday’s practice was run by the assistant coaches and as of now, no replacement has been announced.
The ODU Monarchs play a scheduled loaded with Conference USA opponents in 2014 as they make their transition to playing D1 FBS Football. In 2013 however, their dance card is woefully empty. It’s a limbo year in terms of their transition. According to published reports, the Monarchs get a needed boost by adding a road game at ACC blueblood North Carolina to next year’s schedule.
Tonight’s schedule features a few games that look to be obvious picks on paper. Warwick hosts perennial powerhouse Hampton, and Phoebus meets Denbigh at Darling Stadium. Playoff implications are now becoming clearer.
There’s now four weeks left in the regular season and the countdown to the playoffs is on. Teams from the Bay Rivers District are jockeying against teams from the Battlefield District and Southside District for playoff position. At the Division 2 and Division 1 level, the playoffs have already been adapted so that 32 teams from each level across the state make the playoffs, filling the opening round with more mismatches and more cross state travel.
Another week has gone by, and the playoff races seem to stratify. The cream is rising to the top. We have some big games yet to be played in both Division 5 and Division 6…. Here’s a look at the race to the playoffs.
Norfolk Public Schools released their revised schedule of home games for high school football. All Friday night home games for Norfolk schools have been moved to Saturday afternoons for security reasons related to the shooting death of Lake Taylor student David L. White. The move affects all regular season games for the remainder of the season.
If the playoffs started today, it wouldn’t look good for the Private Schools of The 757. Hampton Christian has joined Norfolk Christian, Broadwater, Isle of Wight Academy and Greenbrier Christian as teams currently in line for a playoff berth. Bishop Sullivan, Hampton Christian, Nansemond-Suffolk, Hampton Roads Academy, and Norfolk Academy are still in position to make a move.
This week’s Freedom Ford Player of the Week is sophomore quarterback Terrence Shambry, II who led his Deep Creek Hornets to a win after a 15 game losing streak. Shambry narrowly won the vote over Bayside senior quarterback Deion Stitt.
