Bethel lineman Ricky Walker might just be the most hotly pursued athlete at Bethel since point guard Allen Iverson. Iverson also happened to play football, but he wound up at Georgetown playing basketball for legendary coach John Thompson.
Green Run running back Anthony Scott was pumped about the opportunity to earn an offer from Virginia Tech. His combine performance was “disappointing”, in his words. A 4.43 forty in the rain had him fuming on Saturday. Despite doing well in one-on-one drills and impressing the coaches in Blacksburg, Anthony Scott was not happy about his camp performance. He’s close to landing an offer, but that’s not good enough for him.
The Virginia Thoroughbreds made their last 7 on 7 event of the season on Thursday, traveling to Charlotte to visit the 49ers and put on a show. The team did well, and the athleticism they displayed netted three offers for players on the team.
Most observers would have thought that Hawaii’s successful bid for Salem wideout Kwamane Bowens was a flash in the pan. Old Dominion Football landed their first local commitment for the 2014 recruiting class on Wednesday night. It fittingly happened at the end of the first session of ODU Team Camp. The young talent in The 757 just keeps getting more recognition. Lake Taylor athletes are also piling up offers. Titan cornerback Nhyre Quinerly added his third offer on Tuesday, and it was a big one… as in Big Ten kind of big.
By all accounts, Grassfield running back Vincent Lowe had a great camp at Virginia Tech. The Grizzly tailback showcased his speed and his overall football skills for the Tech coaching staff in hopes of landing one more offer before shutting down his recruitment. Lowe has quite a number of scholarship offers already, but a Hokie offer would be a difference maker.
Saturday’s one-day camp at Virginia Tech yielded very few surprises on the face of it. A number of prospects wowed the coaches. Several committed players came out to show their support, and quite a few current Hokies visited to see who was showing well. Ocean Lakes defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is closing in a decision for his college choice, and Virginia Tech is on the short list.
When the VHSL proposed changes to the classifications and alignments of teams in Virginia several years ago, many local fans felt the excitement, rivalries, and pageantry of high school football would be lost and it would change Friday Nights under the lights forever.
After 20 years in Hampton, the VHSCA All-Star events are headed elsewhere. The executive committee of the VHSCA voted on Wednesday to move all events to Liberty University in Lynchburg, starting in 2014.
