This week’s Freedom Ford Player of the Week is Western Branch senior running back Josh Marriner. Last Friday night, Marriner had another stellar performance in a win over Nansemond River, keeping him at the top of the rankings among rushing yardage leaders in Southside Hampton Roads.
The showdown between Norfolk unbeatens was everything it was billed to be. Two 7-0 teams from the Eastern District met at Powhatan Field on Saturday afternoon on a perfect day for football. The stands were packed and every fan got their money’s worth.
The season is winding down and the cream has risen to the top in the Beach District. Ocean Lakes won easily, Salem dispatched Kellam, and Bayside had no problems with Princess Anne.

The King’s Fork Bulldogs added some tarnish to next week’s match up between Oscar Smith and Grassfield. King’s Fork came in looking to strengthen their playoff resume, and perhaps Grassfield was looking ahead to taking on the Tigers. Either way, the upset now shakes up the complexion of the Southeastern District standings.
The impending matchup of late season undefeateds is now set. Both Franklin and Sussex Central took care of business in a big way on Friday night, propelling both programs to an 8-0 record as they prepare to face each other next Friday night at Franklin High School.
The latest stats show again that the Peninsula District schools have a propensity to run while the Southside schools run more open offenses. Two of the top three rushers are from the PD, while the rest of the pack comes from the Southside.
