It was as though the Oscar Smith defense knew exactly what was coming.
Nansemond River didn’t throw any new wrinkles at the Tigers, and the Tiger D kept the Warriors honest all night.
On top of that, when Nansemond River did gain ground, they gave it back in penalties.
“We keep losing against good teams. That’s something that me and my staff have to figure out. Like against Indian River, we think we called a better game, we just didn’t execute. We have to find a way to get those jitters out of the kids, and find a way to execute against good teams. We had too many penalties and you can’t do that (against) a good team,” said Nansemond River head coach Justin Conyers after the game.
Nansemond River’s offense was methodical. They ate time off the clock in the first quarter before the scoring started.
Oscar Smith running back Aaron Acevedo broke the ice with an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0 in favor of the Tigers.
Quarterback Cam’Ron Kelly found Brandon Brock for a 39-yard touchdown pass down the visitor’s sideline with 1:19 left in the first quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.
In the second quarter, Kelly scored on a keeper for eight yards and a touchdown just before the break.
Oscar Smith added two scores in the second half; one at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter when Acevedo found pay dirt on an 8-yard run. The last score for the Tigers was a Cam Kelly to Romon Copeland, Jr. pitch and catch for a 14-yard score with 6:02 left in the game.
The only points Nansemond River mustered were late in the game when defensive lineman Josiah Autrey picked off a pass from the Tigers’ back up quarterback and rumbled five yards for a score.
“Our defense plays pretty well. They’re really well prepared. Joe (Jones) and the staff did a pretty good job prepping that defense. We’re pretty good defensively. We’re not bad offensively either,” said Oscar Smith head coach Scott Johnson. “They scored on the offense and it is what it is.”
Oscar Smith (6-0) moves on to face Deep Creek (5-1) next week, while Nansemond River (3-3) visits Western Branch (0-6).
