There was a deep field of talented quarterbacks at Sunday’s opening regional in Springfield. There were 70 quarterbacks competing, so it took a lot to stand out.
“Today I want to prove myself. This is a great opportunity to show who I am and how hard I’ve been working. I just want to show everyone what I can do,” Muskett said.
Tony Muskett brought a lot of skill into the event, but he also brought experience, smarts and a family history of skill at the position.
Peter Muskett graduated from West Springfield High School in the Class of 2017 and walked on at Virginia Tech. He also competed at the Nike Opening Regional. All of that experience has been passed down to Tony and it’s a tangible asset that Tony can draw from.
“He’s the number one contributor in my life. If it wasn’t for him, I’d probably be sitting at home right now,” said Tony.
“I want to play Division I football. I’m getting a lot of interest from Towson and Villanova, and some FCS schools like Coastal Carolina, Kent State… so I’m kinda looking forward to showing what I can do and getting those offers,” he explained. “I feel like I can do everything that (a college coach) would ask of a quarterback. I can throw from the pocket. I can escape. I can run. I can do RPOs, all that stuff. I really understand the game, so I think whatever you need a quarterback to do, I can fit that profile.”
Tony admits that his dream school is likely an Ivy League school considering that a degree from an Ivy and the relationships can set someone on an excellent path for a career after football.
His goal for his senior season? That’s a conference championship. The Spartans had a shot in 2018 after jumping out to a 5-1 start, but they limped to the finish line, losing their final four games in a five win and five loss season.
“At West Springfield, the last time we won (a conference championship) was 2014 or 2015 so people always doubt us. I know how hard we’ve been working. That’s all I want this year. I want to win a championship with my brothers,” Tony stated.
