On October 4, North Stafford dropped a game to Mountain View by the score of 34-26.
First year head coach Neil Sullivan has had his squad focused. Through the loss to Mountain View. Through the losses to Highland Springs, Colonial Forge and Massaponax, the Wolverines paid their dues and grew.
Saturday was the time to show that hard work pays off.
Down 3-0 in the second quarter, quarterback Jamir Boyd rallied his team for an 80-yard drive that included six completions capped by a 13-yard TD pass to Javon Swinton.
Swinton and Boyd would connect twice for scores (13 and 29 yards), and Swinton would add a third touchdown pass with a 10-yard toss to tailback Tevin White late in the third quarter.
A 7-3 halftime lead ballooned to 21-3 with two third quarter touchdowns on Boyd passes.
Mountain View scored their only touchdown in the fourth quarter, once the game was essentially in hand for the Wolverines. Edward Ware threw an 8-yard TD pass to freshman Ike Daniels to narrow the North Stafford lead to 21-10 after the PAT.
That’s how the game would finish.
Mountain View virtually shut down the Wolverine run game (23 carries for 58 yards total). Boyd made up for that shortfall with 25 completions in 35 passing attempts for 327 yards, to go with two interceptions and three touchdowns.
The Wildcats’ offense was limited to 87 rushing yards on 29 carries and 71 total yards passing.
North Stafford will move on to face Stone Bridge next Saturday in a Class 5 state semifinal. On Friday afternoon, Stone Bridge led Woodgrove 22-15 at halftime and scored 35 unanswered second half points against last year’s Class 4 state champions to take the Region 5C title.
