North Stafford defensive back Shawn Asbury (2021 DB 5-10 170) missed most of the 2019 season with an knee injury that was suffered in the spring.
Despite missing time, Asbury is more than making up for it now.
He was able to make the Wolverines’ post-season games, and he had a solid basketball season in his junior year.
College coaches are taking notice and now Virginia Tech has pulled the trigger on an offer for Asbury. North Stafford assistant coach John Harris shared the news with recruitNoVA.
“Yesterday, probably around four o’clock, Shawn called Coach Ham (Justin Hamilton) and they watched film together. Coach Ham was picking his brain as they were watching film to see what he would do in certain situations. Shawn is cerebral and that impressed Coach Hamilton. The coaches met today about him and after their meeting, Coach (Ryan) Smith called me up,” Harris explained. “He told me Coach Ham was so impressed watching the film with Shawn that it put him over the hump. After they saw how cerebral he is, they had to get on him.”
Justin Hamilton is the defensive backs coach for Virginia Tech. Ryan Smith recruits the region for the Hokies.

“That’s big for Shawn. He trains with Joey Slye all off-season. Joey’s like a big deal at our school. Our stadium field is named after his brother,” said Harris. “He’s really excited. I think he’s more excited about this one than with his first offer. He really wants to visit. He wants to know what he can do if he can’t visit… if it’s a virtual visit or whatever. He really liked to have the coach pick his brain watching film.”
Joey Slye played his college ball at Virginia Tech from 2014 to 2017, playing in 51 games across his career of four seasons. He’s now a member of the Carolina Panthers. Older Brother A.J. died of Leukemia in 2014.
“They like Shawn as a potential rover or as a safety. He can do both. They didn’t get too much into that but they like that he can be interchangeable,” Harris stated. “I like that to because he can do that for us. We can move him around a little bit.”
Coach Harris didn’t hesitate to say that Virginia Tech and Pitt would be the first to get a visit from Asbury when the opportunity comes.
“I can honestly say that Tech and Pitt will be the first visits he takes. Which one will be first? I don’t know yet. I can tell you that he’s really excited about getting up to Blacksburg. He actually appreciates the fact that they took their time. They had been talking to him for a long time. They communicate a lot. Coach Lechtenburg, Coach Hamilton, Coach Smith… they’ve take turns hitting him up. He feels accomplished. I’m proud of him. Think about getting an offer from the school you grew up watching on TV. That’s big.”
Asbury’s offer list includes Virginia Tech, Kansas, Ball State, Pitt, Coastal Carolina, Buffalo, James Madison, Navy, Army, Georgia State, Villanova, Kent State, Fordham, Lehigh, Ohio and Campbell.
