Our #9 athlete athlete has seen his teammate in previous graduation classes garner big time recruitment and make big time commitments. Now it’s his turn.
Heading into the regular season, we recognize the top 30 senior prospects in all of Northern Virginia. That’s a tall task, considering that we track the talent at 86 high school programs in the region. Coming into our countdown as the #9 senior prospect region-wide is Potomac Falls free safety Dean Ferguson.
#9 Dean Ferguson (2019 FS 6-2 205) – Potomac Falls High School
“Fundamentally sound, Ferguson is always in the right position on the field and has a great understanding of the game-plan every time out. On the field, he proves that he can make plays in coverage and has great closing speed to prevent big gains. Against the run, he is a sure tackler who isn’t afraid to deliver the big blow to an opposing ball-carrier.”
That was our assessment of Ferguson coming into the 2017 season, and it still rings true. At that time, Dean held offers from Virginia, East Carolina, Army, and ODU. Since that time his offer list has swollen to over a dozen, with Indiana, Wake Forest, Syracuse and West Virginia all jumping on board since the end of his junior season.
In his junior year, Ferguson tallied 84 tackles, 11 forced fumbles, 6 TFL and 6 pass deflections in a season where he earned a First Team All-District and First Team All-Region 5C selection at defensive back.
Again regarding his recruitment, Virginia Tech is in the mix, and it’s rumored that Dean wants to stay in-state to go to college. Maybe a commitment to UVA or Tech is pending. We’ll find out as the season unfolds.
